In a horrifying incident in the farming community of Zakpalsi, Northern Ghana, two individuals have reportedly been lynched on accusations of witchcraft. The tragic event unfolded after one of the victims allegedly provided a resident with contaminated snuff, resulting in severe stomach aches and ultimately leading to the resident’s death. Seeking answers, the grieving family consulted a soothsayer, who attributed the death to the snuff.
Fueled by the soothsayer’s revelation, the enraged youth of Zakpalsi took matters into their own hands, rallying together to attack the alleged witch, Imoro Safura, and her husband. Tragically, the husband fell victim to the violent assault and lost his life within the confines of their home. Safura, however, managed to escape the wrath of the mob, seeking refuge in the chief’s palace.
Despite seeking sanctuary, the chief’s palace offered no respite for Safura. The vengeful youth surrounded the palace, unyielding in their pursuit of justice as they forcibly extracted her from the premises. Subsequently, Safura met a gruesome fate at the hands of her attackers, succumbing to a merciless act of mob justice.
This chilling incident serves as a distressing reminder of the persistence of superstitions and the dangerous consequences they can entail. The brutal lynching at Zakpalsi not only resulted in the loss of innocent lives but also highlights the need for urgent intervention to combat such deeply ingrained beliefs in witchcraft. As the community mourns the tragic deaths, questions surrounding justice, social cohesion, and the influence of traditional practices linger in the air.
