Violence erupts in Ghana as long-standing tribal tensions between the Mamprusi and Gonja groups reach a boiling point. Lukula and Nyoagbini, two villages in the North Gonja District, have been ravaged, leaving behind a trail of destruction and multiple casualties. Fleeing residents seek refuge in the West Mamprusi municipality as the situation escalates.
The recent clash was triggered by the arrival of Gonja warriors from Daboya, who allegedly stormed Janga near Walewale, ordering all Mamprusis to evacuate immediately or face severe consequences. In response, Mamprusi warriors were mobilized to prevent the arrival of a rival chief from Daboya. Despite a warning issued by National Security, urging both sides to withdraw their warriors from the villages, tensions persisted.
Law enforcement intervened by deploying police personnel, leading to the apprehension of several suspects and the seizure of 10 motorbikes. However, fleeing residents report that Gonja traditional warriors remain entrenched in the village, refusing to retreat. This ongoing violence between the two tribes has plagued the region since the formation of the new regions, exacerbating an already volatile situation.
