A Cape Coast Circuit Court has remanded Samuel Idan, a 37-year-old vulcanizer, and two other people for allegedly stealing a Hyundai taxi cab valued GH40,000. After reportedly stealing the automobile, Idan and his accomplice—who are still at large—left it in the hands of 36-year-old electrician Richard Assan before selling it to merchant Bismark Arthur, 42. As Assan and Arthur are being jailed for dishonestly receiving, Idan has been charged with robbery. When they appeared before the presiding judge, Mrs. Dorinda Smith Arthur, they all entered not guilty pleas to their accusations.
The complainant, Mr. Charles Quansah, a cab driver, resides in Kasoa’s Millennium City, according to Chief Inspector Samuel Reynolds Amoako, while Idan resides at Apewosika, Cape Coast. But Assan and Arthur reside in Awutu Bereku and Buduburam, respectively, in Kasoa. He claimed that on December 3, 2022, at around 23:00, Idan hired him at the Kasoa overbridge to Winneba with the intention of robbing the taxi driver. He claimed that on December 4, about 00:15, Idan, who was being sought in connection with another robbery case in Winneba, instructed the driver to drop him off behind the Winneba District Court. The prosecution testified in court that as soon as they arrived at the scene, Idan’s accomplice came out of a bush brandishing a club, unlocked the driver’s door, and began repeatedly beating the driver.
They then yanked him out of the car and continued clubbing him until he took to his heels, and they sped off with the car, registered GW 9593 – 21. Chief Inspector Amoako said the driver reported the case at the Low-Cost Police Station in Winneba and Idan was later picked up from his hideout upon a tip off, and during interrogation, he confessed selling the car with Assan to Arthur at Biriwa. After his arrest, the Police searched and found his NHIS card, a Ghanaian driver’s license, ECOWAS card, voter ID card, and a COVID-19 vaccination card and a list of contact numbers in a card holder bearing the name Charles Quansah.
The prosecutor informed the court that when questioned, the accused was unable to provide any specific justifications. He claimed that the car had since been found and that the case was still being looked into. The defendants are scheduled to return to court on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
