The Sowutoum District Court has heard a case involving a 29-year-old shop manager who is accused of killing Shadrack Allu in the West Hills Mall in Weija, Accra. Despite being accused of murder, Kwame Osei Boafo’s plea was upheld. Boafo has been placed in police prison pending a February 16 court date by the court presided over by Mr. Stephen Tabiri. However, the defense attorney challenged the facts as they were stated by the prosecution, claiming that the case was complicated by “cause,” which could not be connected to his client.
The attorney said that a postmortem report would help his clients understand the circumstances because the evidence revealed that the deceased and a certain police officer had fought over a black polythene bag. The defense attorney claims that when the alleged victim’s taser was used on the accused after his arrest, it was not even operational.
According to Inspector M. Kwakye’s account of the events, Bernard Barnor Denkyi, the complainant, worked as the operations manager of the Weija-based West Hills Mall. According to the prosecution, Boafo also served as the shop manager for Max Buy Ghana Limited, an electrical appliance retailer also housed in the West Hills Mall. According to the report, Police Sergeant Daniel Abeiku of the Visibility Unit at the Ghana Police Service’s Headquarters was assigned to the aforementioned Mall on January 30 of this year.
According to the prosecution, Sgt. Abeiku observed Shadrack Allu, a witness in the case who is now 32 years old, and Ibrahim Seshi, also wearing backpacks. According to the report, the Police called Allu so he could inspect his backpack after becoming suspicious of the pair’s movements. Allu opened his backpack, took out “something wrapped in a black polythene and put it in his back pocket and started sprinting outdoors,” the prosecution told the court. Sgt. Abieku allegedly tracked Allu and took him into custody. When he was being handcuffed, he fought with the policeman. During the incident, the deceased removed the wrapped object from the polythene bag and consumed it.
The prosecution claimed that after witnessing the occurrence, Boafo arrived on the scene, pulled out his own taser, and “shocked the deceased.” The victim was rendered unconscious as a result and sent to the Somotech Hospital inside the Mall for treatment, but the attending physician pronounced him dead there and then. According to the prosecution, Boafo’s taser was found after he was apprehended. Boafo informed the police during questioning that he purchased the taser for self-defense. The prosecution said that after a thorough examination, no outward signs of an assault were discovered on Allu’s corpse. According to the Prosecution, the body of Allu had since been deposited at the Police Hospital for preservation and autopsy, while investigations continued.
