Following a demolition project done by the Obuasi East District Assembly, around 400 people of PTP, an Obuasi suburb in the Ashanti Region, have been left homeless. Stephen Sekyere of Despite Media claims that the assembly undertook the demolition project to regain some land in order to build hostels for students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology – Obuasi Campus. Some of the impacted citizens can be seen fighting with some security agents in a video of the exercise that GhanaWeb has obtained.
Multiple police rounds were fired in the midst of the altercation. The District Chief Executive Officer for Obuasi East, Faustina Amissah, allegedly oversaw the demolition activity without giving the affected residents a chance to leave or find alternative housing. However, the DCE has refuted the victims’ allegations. She claimed that the inhabitants had been given sufficient time to leave the area. In the interim, the impacted residents have threatened to sue the Assembly.
