The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the incidents that happened at the Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi on Monday morning, admitting that it acted inappropriately.
DCOP Kwasi Akomeah-Apraku, the Deputy Regional Police Commander who was acting as the Regional Police Commander at the time of the turmoil, was removed from office as a result. DCOP Apraku has also been arrested, along with two other senior officers: Regional Operations Officer ACP/Mr George Ankomah and Suame Divisional Police Commander ACP/Mr Alex Cudjoe Acquah.
The announcement came after the IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, arrived in the Ashanti Regional capital following the disruptions, according to a statement released by the Ghana Police Service Monday night. At least 25 students and police personnel were hospitalised in Kumasi after police opened fire on protesting pupils who had set up roadblocks on the Abrepo Junction – Bohyen major highway to express their dissatisfaction with frequent accidents in front of their school.
In a statement confirming the top cops’ punishment, Director of Public Affairs Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi recognised that a better technique to dealing with the disturbance may have been utilised. “It was also discovered that, despite the fact that no one was shot, the Police management of the incident was unsatisfactory and fell short of our standard operating procedure on crowd control,” she said.
