As a five-member commission that looked into recent incidents in the school proposed a surcharge, students at the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute have started paying a sum of GH430. Before being readmitted to the school, each of the more than a thousand students is required to pay the fee.
The school has reopened after being temporarily closed down by the Ashanti Regional Security Council after students went on a rampage and damaged both public and private property. The sum will cover the property damage incurred during the protests by the students, whose activities were related to their complaints about the final exams administered by their predecessors in 2022. Some parents are disputing the amount the pupils are being assessed, according to Kwasikuma Mawunyo Cudjoe, chairman of the parent teacher association at the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute.
The Asokore Mampong District Court is currently hearing the case of 43 students, including minors, who were detained during the rampage. On Tuesday, defense attorney Kwabena Gyamfi asked the court to revoke a directive requiring his clients to show up at the police station once a week. He is also seeking the prosecution to withdraw the charges against his clients since the student population has been surcharged.
