The discovery of a newborn baby found dead and abandoned in a rubbish bin on Monday shocked the locals of Nkawkaw New Station in the Eastern Region. After being delivered, the deceased infant was discovered in a soap box and put behind the public garbage can.
According to an eyewitness, Sakyi John, who was speaking in an interview with Andy Frimpong Manso of Republic FM, he witnessed a throng marching to Nkawkaw New station near the new mosque in the neighborhood where people often throw their trash in a public trash can.
He claimed that when he arrived on the scene, a newborn child was being kept in a soap box behind the public trash can. He said that when he got to the scene, the new infant was already dead. According to the eyewitness, the incident took place Monday evening between 5:30 and 6 o’clock.
The foetus was removed from the location after police received the information, according to Chief Superintendent Rev. Dr. Adane Ameyaw, the commander of the Nkawkaw Divisional Police. He claims that because it is a brand-new fetus, the police believe it to be an abortion rather than a newborn left behind.
The abandoned fetus has been collected, he claimed, and stored in the mortuary while the required investigation is carried out. “Yes, yesterday we received similar information. We dispatched our men to the area right away to help. The infant has been kept in the morgue because, after we have apprehended any suspects, we will need to conduct some clinical tests to determine whose baby it was, so we can’t just bury the dead. The situation could have been eaten by dogs had our men not acted quickly to save it. Because it’s a newborn infant, more of a foetus, the police believe this to be an abortion.
So I have directed the investigator to activate full investigation into the matter today and we are going to apprehend the perpetrators of this barbaric act”, he said while speaking to Andy Frimpong Manso in a phone interview. He said, no arrest has been made but the police will continue a full investigation into the matter to initiate the arrest of whoever is behind this inhumane act.
