Tamale, the capital of the Tamale Metropolis, is gaining notoriety for its alarming trend of attacks on journalists and radio presenters. In yet another incident, Halik Musah, a presenter from Tamale-based Radio Tamale, fell victim to a vicious assault. Disturbing video footage captured Musah being forcefully pulled out of his vehicle and subjected to punches and derogatory remarks by unidentified assailants.
The motive behind this latest attack remains unclear, as it seemingly occurred at an undisclosed location. Helpless and outnumbered, Musah could only attempt to shield himself from the aggression. The assailants, whose identities remain concealed, not only physically assaulted him but also hurled insults at him.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another assault that took place just three weeks ago. Iddrisu Hardi, also known as Pagaaza, and Mumuni Osman were apprehended for attacking Abubakari Sadiq, a presenter at Dagbon Fm, during a live studio discussion. Recently, the two assailants pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, assault, unlawful entry, and threat of death. They were convicted and ordered to pay a fine of GH₵3,600 ($630) or face 18 months of imprisonment with hard labor, ultimately managing to pay the fine.
The escalating violence against journalists and radio presenters in the Tamale Metropolis is deeply concerning. These attacks not only threaten the safety and well-being of individuals but also undermine press freedom and the crucial role of media in society. The authorities must take decisive action to address this distressing trend and ensure the protection of journalists who strive to inform and engage the public.
