(Ghanacrimes.comThe Government of Ghana through the Trade Ministry Committee on foreign retail trade has closed down 92 shops belonging to foreign traders at Suame Magazine in Kumasi. According to the committee, the shops were operating without compiling to the provisions of Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC) Act.
According to the committee, before the closure of the shops, the owners were given an 18 month ultimatum to enable them to comply with the rules governing foreign retailers opening shops in Ghana.
Most of the closed shops are Nigerian owned. The Nigeria Union of Traders Association believes their members are being unnecessarily and unfairly targeted. This action comes on the heels of a tweet by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon Shirley Botchway detailing how the closure of the Nigerian border brought Ghanaian businesses to the brink of collapse.
