In Accra, a 28-year-old man named Michael Okai Afoakwa has been placed in police custody by an Accra Circuit Court. He is facing allegations of stealing USD37,000 from his aunt, Madam Akosua Poku, who resides in the United States of America.
The prosecution claimed that Afoakwa, who is currently unemployed, was given the money by his aunt with the intention of setting up a block factory in Nungua, Accra. However, he is accused of misusing the funds for his personal expenses instead of the intended purpose. To deceive his aunt, Afoakwa allegedly took photos of an unknown block factory and sent them to her.
Suspicions arose within the family, prompting the aunt to report the matter to the police. Afoakwa was subsequently arrested on September 1, 2023. Although Afoakwa has denied the charges, his lawyer, Samuel Kyei Asante, has requested bail. Asante argued that his client has a clean legal record, supports his family financially, and is willing to face trial if granted bail. The court has not yet made a ruling on the bail application, and Afoakwa will remain in police custody until the next hearing scheduled for September 25, 2023.
